Ok, first off....I know this portrait does not look exactly like her, but please keep in mind....that I painted this on a card no bigger than 2.5" by 3.5". Yes, that is right.....someone in a drawing group told me about artist trading cards.....and I guess you have to create tiny works of art. I have never painted a portrait this small, and it does make it difficult to get the details right.
Also, this is my first time using the gouache paints. I liked the watercolors that much, that I wanted to try gouache as well.....which I guess it supposed to somewhat like the watercolors....only thing is, they seem to dry a bit faster. I was not used to that, but I will adapt in time I guess.
Anyway, this was my first ATC ( artist trading card ) that I completed. I think it turned out ok for being so small, and being the first one I painted.

High School Self Portrait

In high school, I rarely ever participated in the actual art class assignments. Usually, I just drew whatever I wanted, and the teacher let it slide, and gave me grades based on my work that I did. However, at the end of senior year, my art teacher threatened to fail me, if I did not do this self portrait. She proceeded to remind me of all that I got away with in the past with not completing class assignments, and told me I MUST do this. Of all things..... I hated most.....self portraits! Anyway, I did it begrudgingly, and I sat on the floor, with a mirror propped against my bed at an angle, and forced this quick picture out. I was sort of angry at the time, and I guess it shows in the picture, as it has a rather dark look to it. You can even see, at the bottom, my commentary..........I wrote "this picture rots". I was a bit moody back then. I don't think I usually look like this, but I guess at that time, I did.

Another older drawing, and another member of the band, Metallica, this is Kirk Hammet. ( I hope I am spelling their names correctly). You can see how the paper is warped a bit ( again, due to me pressing too hard with the pencil). Although I was putting more detail into the drawings, I had still not yet discovered the different grades of graphite. All I drew with back then, was a regular, school issue #2 pencil. I can't help but wonder how much better these would have looked, had I known more about graphite in those days.

This was a portrait I drew of Jim Morrison way back in my high school days ( about 1988) . I can see many of the obvious flaws. The ones that stands out the most, is the wavy lines in it, and areas where I actually tore into the paper with my pencil because I was pressing too hard, trying to get certain areas darker. This was, of course, before I discovered that graphite pencils came in various grades, other than #2, which was all that I used back then for my artwork. I never actually completed this drawing, because of the damage to the paper, but I decided to post it, so I can reflect on my younger days.

Another drawing from my high school days. This is a portrait of Chuck Billy, lead singer for the band, Testament. The drawing is in pretty rough shape, as I have not taken the best care of it.
